The 1st Battalion, 68th Armor was activated 1 July 1957.
The Bn came to Germany on 24 April 1968 and was stationed in Aschaffenburg as part of the 3rd Infantry Division.
Due to the new army-concept “ROAD”, the Bn moved to Baumholder in 1963 and became attached to the 8th Infantry Division.
In 1978 the Bn moved to Wildflecken.
Most of the time the 1/68 Armor Bn used M60 A3 tanks. In the late 80s the Bn began fielding the new M1 “Abrams” MBT.
The 1/68 Armor Bn was deactivated in spring of 1991.
